Ahhh, The Great Outdoors. It’s been a while since I’ve been away from the city lights. Several years BD (Before Daisy), we went on a fishing trip with friends. A river ran behind our little cabin. The only sounds were of rustling leaves, the gurgling of water, the snap of twigs under foot. Little birds bounced from branch to branch, chirping. It was heavenly.
There was a fire pit with chairs around it nearby and all I could think about was the fresh pine scent perfuming the air, the night sky flooded with sparkling stars and the crackling glow of a smoky campfire… I loved it so much that it made me think about how fire pits can bring alive your garden. It would be a great edition, especially when it comes to cooking. I’ll have to look into this a bit more.
…and ooey, gooey, crunchy, smoky sweet s’mores.
Crispy, burnt white marshmallow squooshed over a thin piece of chocolate, sandwiched between graham crackers. I was happier than a pig in mud! Fast-forward to this morning. I got to the office, coffee in hand, settled in and started work. Then, it hit me.
Luckily, there’s a fire station near our house.
Marshmallows are in top form when properly incinerated. Nutella replaced the traditional chocolate. And, saltines stood in for graham crackers. They cut the sweetness so that the chocolate and marshmallows stand out. A bit of salt is nice, too, don’t you think?
The results were FABULOUS.
You’ll need a gas stove for this one or a backyard fire pit.
Makes 20
1 jar Nutella
20 jumbo marshmallows
40 saltine crackers
2-3 bamboo skewers
Line crackers, flat side up on a tray, in pairs.
Slather half a teaspoon (or more) of Nutella onto one cracker in each pair.
Skewer a marshmallow and roast over the fire of a stove burner.
Be very careful not to set the house on fire.
Once the marshmallow catches fire, blow out the flame and put it over
the Nutella, cover with a cracker and pull the skewer out.
Repeat.
Repeat.
Repeat.
Eat.
Repeat.
Share.
Eat.
Repeat.
Stacks and stacks are quick to appear and to disappear.
